Day 46: Last Call

No, I'm not planning to stay at the bar until it closes down tonight, though I could probably make some interesting friends... maybe that's an idea for later.

November is coming soon and with it Remembrance Day in Canada (Nov. 11th).

One of my favourite parts of playing the trumpet growing up was having the honour to play the Last Call. I haven't played my trumpet seriously since undergrad. I'm not sure that our dog Banner has ever even heard the sound it makes :) He was mildly freaked out, mostly interested, when today I pulled out my trumpet. My intention is that by Nov. 11th I will have no trouble playing the Last Call, which means I need to whip my lips (embouchure) into shape! I'm hopeful it's like riding a bike!

Wish me luck! Is there anything new you're trying, or something you're trying for the first time again, like me?

  1. Thought I should clarify the song is called the Last Post Bugle Call...

  2. Thank you for clarifying! You saved me from having to comment on that last call business. I'm glad you are playing again! Mark and I just started curling last week. It was a bit awkward at first to figure out the moves but we are both pretty excited to be learning a new sport together.

    1. Curling seems like a lot of fun! Hope you don't go home with too many bruised knees.

  3. It's funny because it is like riding a bike! I played trumpet since grade 3 but hadn't picked it up in years, until my sister asked me a couple of years ago to play the Last Post at her school for their assembly. I practiced a couple of times but it came back to me once I warmed up a bit. Good luck!!

    1. I've been practising to get my mouth back to where it was (which probably won't happen). I want the tone when I hit the high G to sound effortless and not like my head is going to explode!
